How to Use This Scorecard

Shrink your cover to thumbnail size
View it at roughly the size it appears in Amazon search results — about 160 pixels wide. This is the honest test most covers fail.

Answer each question truthfully
Use 'Somewhat' when you're unsure — it usually means there's room to improve. The score is only as useful as your honesty.

Read the category breakdown
The panel shows which areas are weakest. Red and amber categories are where you'll get the biggest lift.

Open the top books in your niche and run the same questions on them. Note what they do that yours doesn't.

Common Cover Mistakes
Title too small to read as a thumbnail
The #1 conversion killer. If you can't read the title at 160px wide, neither can shoppers.
Low contrast between text and background
Light text on a busy or pale background disappears. Add a shadow, stroke, or solid band behind the title.
Wrong genre signals
A literary font on a thriller, or pastel colors on horror, confuses browsers and loses trust instantly.
Too many fonts and effects
More than 2–3 fonts or heavy effects look amateur. Restraint reads as professional.
Stretched or low-resolution images
Distorted or pixelated art screams self-made. Use high-res images at the correct aspect ratio.
