What the safe zone is
Every printed book is cut with a tiny amount of mechanical tolerance. The safe zone — sometimes called the live area — is the region comfortably inside the trim line where you can safely place anything you do not want touched by that cut. Think of it as a “do not cross” border for your important content.
There are really three zones to keep in mind:
- Bleed — outside the trim; artwork here will be cut off (intended).
- Trim line — where the page is actually cut.
- Safe zone — inside the trim; keep all text and key art here.
How much buffer to leave
Use these practical buffers between your important content and the trim line:
- Interior pages: keep text and key art at least 0.25″ inside the trim.
- Covers: keep the title, author name and logos at least 0.125″–0.25″ inside the trim.
- Page numbers & headers: these are content too — keep them inside the safe area.
When in doubt, pull it in
A slightly larger margin never gets rejected. A slightly too-tight one can clip your title. Err toward more breathing room.Safe zone on the cover
Covers have one extra consideration: the barcode. Amazon prints a barcode in the lower-right area of the back cover, so keep that corner clear in addition to respecting the trim. Background art can run edge to edge (into the bleed), but text should stay inside the safe zone. See our barcode placement guide for the exact area to leave open.
How to verify it
Lay out your files against a template with the trim and safe lines marked, then preview in Amazon's online previewer before publishing. Amazon's full guidance lives in the KDP Help Center, and you can download exact cover templates from the KDP cover template generator.
- Sizing your cover? Use the cover size calculator.
- Working on the interior? Pair this with bleed & margins.
How KDPBuilder helps
KDPBuilder helps you prepare interiors and covers that respect the safe zone by default — keeping text and key elements inside the live area and letting only background art reach the bleed. That means fewer surprises on the printed copy and a smoother path through Amazon KDP's review.
