KDP Hardcover Cover Size

Hardcover covers follow the same logic as paperbacks — just bigger. The extra size comes from the wrap that folds over the boards and the hinge gaps beside the spine.

Why hardcover is a different size

A KDP hardcover uses a case laminate cover: your artwork is printed on a sheet that wraps around rigid front and back boards and folds over to the inside. Because of that fold and the boards, the printable case is larger than the finished trim size and includes a couple of features paperbacks don't have.

ElementApprox. allowanceWhy it exists
Wrap~0.59″ each outer edgeFolds over and glues to the inside of the boards
Hinge gap~0.375″ each side of spineWhere the cover flexes as the book opens
Board overhang~0.125″Boards extend slightly beyond the pages

Indicative allowances to show why the case is larger — always size from a current hardcover template for your trim.

Hardcover spine is calculated differently

Hardcover spine width still grows with page count, but it uses a different factor and a larger base allowance than paperback because of the boards. Set your spine width calculator to hardcover to get the right value, then fold it into the full case width with the cover size calculator.

Don't reuse paperback dimensions

A paperback wrap will not fit a hardcover of the same trim — the wrap, hinge and spine allowances are all different. Size the hardcover case on its own.

Designing the hardcover case

  • Extend background art through the full wrap so the folded edges are printed.
  • Keep titles and text inside the safe zone, away from the hinge and wrap.
  • Keep the lower-right back cover clear for the barcode.
  • Design at 300 DPI and export a single print-ready case file.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a KDP hardcover cover bigger than a paperback?
A hardcover (case laminate) cover wraps around rigid boards and folds over the edges, so it needs extra material on all sides — the wrap. It also includes a hinge gap on each side of the spine where the cover flexes when the book opens. That's why the printable case is noticeably larger than the trim size.
How is the hardcover spine width calculated?
Hardcover spine width is based on page count and paper, but uses a different factor and a larger base allowance than paperback because of the boards. Use a spine calculator set to hardcover to get the right value, then add it into the full case dimensions.
What is the wrap on a hardcover?
The wrap is the extra cover material — around 0.59″ on each outer edge — that folds over and is glued to the inside of the boards. Your background art must extend through the wrap so there are no unprinted edges when it folds.
What is the hinge gap?
The hinge is the small gap on each side of the spine where the case bends as the cover opens. You keep this area free of important text or detail so nothing critical falls on the fold.
Are hardcover trim sizes the same as paperback?
Hardcover supports fewer trim sizes than paperback, and availability can differ by marketplace. Confirm the current hardcover sizes in your KDP account before you design, since the full case is built from the trim size you choose.
Do I keep the barcode area clear on a hardcover too?
Yes. As with paperbacks, keep the lower-right back-cover area clear for the barcode, keep text inside the safe zone, and extend background art into the wrap. The principles are the same — only the dimensions are larger.
