Everything you need to know about creating and publishing books with KDP Builder.

How Credits Work

Credits are the currency used for AI-powered generation steps in KDP Builder.

Each action (market research, chapter drafting, cover generation, etc.) costs a specific number of credits. You can see the cost before each action.

New accounts receive 50 free credits to get started. You can purchase additional credits or subscribe to a plan from the Credits page.

If a generation fails due to a system error, your credits are automatically refunded. Credits do not expire.

How to Create a Book

1. Start a new project from the Dashboard and choose your book type (non-fiction, fiction, children's, puzzle, coloring, journal, planner, etc.).

2. Phase 1 — Discovery: Enter your topic and target audience. The AI performs market research, analyzes competitors, and identifies content opportunities.

3. Phase 2 — Blueprint: Generate title options, create a detailed table of contents, set your trim size, and establish your book's voice and structure.

4. Phase 3 — Manuscript: Draft each chapter with AI assistance. You can regenerate, edit, or add author notes for guidance.

5. Phase 4 — Editing: Run editing passes to polish grammar, style, flow, and consistency across your manuscript.

6. Phase 5 — Design: Generate your ebook cover, paperback full-wrap cover (with spine and back cover), and format your interior PDF.

7. Phase 6 — Publishing: Generate metadata (description, keywords, categories), preview your package, and download your upload-ready files.

How Covers Work

Ebook Cover: A front-only cover image (1600×2560 pixels, 300 DPI) used for the Kindle listing thumbnail. This is a JPEG/PNG file.

Paperback Full-Wrap Cover: A single PDF containing back cover + spine + front cover, sized to your book's trim dimensions and page count. This is what Amazon prints.

The spine width is calculated automatically from your page count and paper type.

Covers include barcode-safe zones on the back for Amazon's ISBN barcode placement.

You can also use the standalone Cover Maker tool to generate covers without creating a full book project.

What's in a KDP Package

Your downloadable ZIP package includes everything needed to publish on Amazon KDP:

• Ebook cover image (JPEG, 1600×2560)

• Paperback full-wrap cover PDF (if print format selected)

• Interior PDF formatted for your chosen trim size with proper margins

• DOCX manuscript file

• EPUB file for ebook distribution

• Metadata text file with title, subtitle, description, 7 keywords, categories, and author bio

ISBN Guidance

eBooks on Kindle: No ISBN is required. Amazon assigns an ASIN automatically.

Paperback books: You can use Amazon's free KDP ISBN (the publisher/imprint will be listed as "Independently published") or provide your own purchased ISBN from Bowker (US) or your country's ISBN agency.

Hardcover books: Same rules as paperback — free KDP ISBN or your own.

If you use your own ISBN, you can set a custom publisher/imprint name.

This is informational guidance only, not legal advice. Check Amazon's current KDP help pages for the latest ISBN policies.

Troubleshooting Failed Exports

If a generation or export fails:

• Check the error message — it usually explains the issue.

• Your credits are automatically refunded for system errors.

• Try regenerating the specific asset (cover, interior, metadata) rather than the entire package.

• If the issue persists, contact support with your project name and the error message.

• For cover issues: ensure your title isn't too long for the cover layout. Try a shorter subtitle.

• For interior PDF issues: very large books (500+ pages) may need extra processing time.

• For EPUB issues: complex formatting or special characters can sometimes cause validation errors.
